Who: The Coalition of Religious Communities, Crossroads Urban Center, the Nomad Alliance and Powerful Moms Who Care.
Why: Last month, 77 families in Salt Lake County were told there was not room for them at the homeless shelter. On Thursday, October 20, an emergency meeting with leaders from the state, county, city and all the homeless providers met to discuss how to get kids indoors this winter. Unfortunately, the emergency meeting was focused on how to prevent things from getting worse and how to better serve families that are sleeping outside this winter.
The faith leaders and anti-homelessness advocates organizing this event strongly believe this is not good enough.
The Executive Director of Crossroads Urban Center, Glenn Bailey, says, “We are talking about young children sleeping outside in the snow. The state can solve this problem by increasing funding for motel vouchers or opening public buildings at night to homeless families without other options.”
Rev. David Nichols, the pastor at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church says, “"In the most family-oriented State in the country, the fact that nearly children and parents are currently being left to fend for themselves out in the cold is not just embarrassing but immoral."
Kseniya Kniazeva says of the Nomad Alliance adds, “Just last night one of our teammembers saw a family with four or five children, all under 11, setting up a camp outside a human resource center. The mother looked shell shocked, newly homeless, carrying their life processions in a plastic wagon. This is not okay.”
